Eredivisie club Feyenoord have expressed their happiness at seeing Moroccan star Karim El Ahmadi open a new chapter in his career.

El Ahmadi left Feyenoord for Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad, with the transfer completed earlier this week.

The move saw the Atlas Lions star end an eight-year relationship with the Rotterdam club (spread across two spells).

The 33-year-old joined Al Ittihad on a two-year deal, and Feyenoord fully respected his desire to leave the Eredivisie despite having one year remaining on his contract at De Kuip Stadium.

“Karim really wanted to take another step to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, the Emirates, which he always had in mind, which we discussed a few years ago,” technical director of Feyenoord Martin van Geel explained.

“He has been very important to us over the past three years, he has also won the four prizes, and we are pleased that he can take that step, and we have cooperated on that.”

In terms of replacing the Moroccan midfielder, Feyenoord already have plans in place.

“Of course, we already have a number of players who were able to get along perfectly well in that position, as well as a World Cup player in the form of Renato Tapia ]Peru], and we also set out to make this group as strong as possible in terms of depth,” added van Geel.
