Cameroonian defender Yann Songo has signed a new deal with English League One outfit Plymouth Argyle.

The Pilgrims offered the former Orlando City and Ross County defender a new deal at the end of the 2017/18 season and he has finally signed it.

Songo helped Plymouth finish seventh on the league standings – three points behind sixth-placed Charlton Athletic, who qualified for the promotional playoffs.

The 26-year-old player, who joined the club from English Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers in 2016, made 33 appearances for the Pilgrims.

The club released the following statement ahead of the new 2018/19 League One season:

“The final piece of Derek Adams’ pre-season jigsaw fell into place on the day that the Argyle players reported back for pre-season training, when defender Yann Songo’o signed a new deal.”

“The 26 year-old French-born Cameroonian youth international defender goes into his third season with the Pilgrims, having previously played under Derek at Ross County while on loan from Blackburn Rovers.”

“Yann, son of legendary Cameroon international goalkeeper Jacques Songo’o, has made 92 Argyle appearances, scoring twice,” a club statement read.

Songo’s father, Jacques spent the vast majority of his professional career in France and Spain – Deportivo de La Coruña.

The retired goalkeeper appeared in more than 200 official games over the course of six seasons and winning the 2000 national championship.

He also represented the Cameroon national team in four FIFA World Cups.

Yann has only featured for Cameroon’s national under-20 side in 2011.
